We tell the CBA story to all our new team members upon joining. Formally, our story begins in 1990 when the legal profession became regulated. Back then, our firm was called Cunescu & Balaciu, and we were among the first law offices set up in post communist Romania. Alina Balaciu and Constantin Cunescu began working as a team and, together they achieved many “firsts” in Romania at the time. In fact, they influenced the way the legal profession and its regulatory framework progressed, and due to this experience, helped train many generations of lawyers since, thereby ensuring stability and continuing evolution for their firm.
As soon as the legislative framework for legal partnerships was created in 1996, Cunescu & Balaciu was immediately incorporated as such. That same year, Mihail Giugaru joined as a partner, and so the firm’s name became Cunescu, Balaciu & Giugaru. The firm continued operating under this name until Mr. Giugaru was appointed to the Supreme Court of Justice, and subsequently as a member of the Competition Council, a position he held until his retirement.
When Ms Beatrice Onica-Jarka joined the firm as a partner in 1997, the firm adopted its current name of Cunescu, Balaciu & Asociatii. Over the next 12 months several partners would join for brief periods before moving towards other professional directions.
Dinu Petre, our current Managing Partner joined as a partner in 1999, and he was followed in 2002 by Monica Badescu. It was during this period, that Alina Anca Balaciu was asked to take on the position of Director General for the National Trade Registry.
Due to her appointment, Dinu Petre was named Managing Partner, a position he still holds to this day.
During the following period, new associated senior lawyers joined CBA team.
Both founding partners retired: Constantin Cunescu in 2009, and Alina Balaciu in 2013. With their retirements, the firm was now under the complete control of the second generation of partners – a first for Romania!
This new generation carries on the traditions and values established by our founding partners, thus ensuring a stable nurturing ground for future lawyers and continuing our unwavering commitment to provid the best possible solutions for our diverse clients.
